PROJECT: TORONTO HEALTHY HOUSE WATER REUSE SYSTEM & POTABLE WATER SYSTEM
LOCATION: Toronto, Ontario
CLIENT: Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
DESCRIPTION: Engineering assessment of a water reuse and water treatment system serving 2 residential (urban) homes. The two residences are off-grid, in that they are not connected to either a municipal water supply or wastewater collection system, and all wastewater is collected and treated for a variety of uses including toilet flushing, laundry, bathing & showers, and irrigation. The water reuse treatment process includes primary solids removal, biological treatment (recirculating filter), solids filtration (roughing, fine & activated carbon), and ozonation, followed by storage. The rainwater treatment system includes a cistern, followed by a slow sand filter, activated carbon filter, ozone disinfection, and storage. Work carried out included performing a technical review of the treatment processes, designing and overseeing a monitoring program to verify the system performance and reliability, and making recommendations to improve the system performance and address problems with bacterial regrowth in the system.
