PROJECT: ANAEROBIC SLUDGE DIGESTER FORENSIC INVESTIGATION
LOCATION: Vancouver, BC
OWNER: Commonwealth Insurance Company and Cigna Insurance Company
DESCRIPTION: The bursting of Anaerobic Sludge Digester No.3 at a 596,000,000 m3/d municipal sewage treatment plant serving the City of Vancouver led to the necessity of discharging incompletely treated and odourous sludge from that and other digesters to sludge lagoons creating odour problems that had to be mitigated. In addition, it became necessary to subsequently truck undigested sludge to other treatment plants for processing. This led to a multi million dollar insurance claim for the costs of dealing with the results of the loss of the digester. NovaTec was retained to conduct a forensic investigation regarding the technical validity of the claim and concluded that the claim was technically without merit. The findings were accepted by all parties.
