PROJECT: EFFLUENT SNOWMAKING TECHNOLOGY
DEVELOPMENT & DEMONSTRATION
LOCATION: Kamloops, British
Columbia
OWNER: NovaTec Consultants Inc.
DESCRIPTION: Technology demonstration
and design criteria development for generating snow from secondary
sewage effluent. Impurities rejected during crystal formation
migrate through the snow pack during the initial stages of the
melt. Typically up to 90 percent of the impurities are present
in the first 10 percent of the melt, which then enters the soil.
Parameters assessed included nutrients, bacteria, and metals
from meltwater and soil lysimeter sampling vessels buried beneath
each test snow pack.
ROLE: In-house research project
financially sponsored by Environment Canada, B.C. Science Council,
B.C. Environment, and the City of Kamloops.
