PROJECT: PILOT SCALE ASB TREATABILITY WITH
CHEMICAL ADDITION FOR REMOVAL OF TAINTING PROPENSITY FROM PULP
MILL EFFLUENT
LOCATION: Kitimat, B.C.
OWNER: Eurocan Pulp & Paper Company
DESCRIPTION: The treated effluent from
this unbleached kraft mill causes tainting to eulachon runs.
The objective of the pilot program was to investigate upgrading
options to reduce the tainting propensity of the treated effluent.
A trailer-mounted two and three cell aerated stabilization basin
(ASB) was operated for about nine months under controlled conditions
involving short and long retention, high and low temperatures
and with and without hydrogen peroxide feed. The findings of
the study formed the basis for recommendations to upgrade the
existing treatment system.
ROLE: Specialist sub-consultant, pilot
plant design, and operation.
