PROJECT: PILOT AIR AND OXYGEN ACTIVATED SLUDGE PLANTS TREATMENT
 LOCATION: Squamish, B.C.
OWNER: Western Pulp Inc.
DESCRIPTION: Design, procurement, start-up and parallel operation of a 72 m3/d air pilot activated sludge plant and a 41 m3/d oxygen pilot activated sludge plant to compare performance for the removal of conventional parameters, AOX, chlorinated phenolics, resin and fatty acids and toxicity at a bleached kraft mill. Findings after nine months of operation under numerous operating conditions concluded that there was no appreciable difference in performance between the two systems. The findings were used to size the full scale treatment facility to maximize AOX and chlorinated phenolics destruction.
