PROJECT: PILOT ANAEROBIC AND AEROBIC TREATMENT PLANTS
 LOCATION: Port Alice, B.C.
OWNER: Western Pulp Inc.
DESCRIPTION: Design, procurement, start-up and parallel operation of an 18 m3/d Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) pilot treatment plant and a 50 m3/d extended aeration activated sludge pilot treatment plant, both incorporating separate pH adjustment, nutrient addition and heat exchanger. The UASB plant treated the three most concentrated waste streams, whereas the activated sludge plant treated the entire waste stream from an ammonia based dissolving sulphite mill. Findings after about one year of operation, under several operating conditions, led to the elimination from further consideration of the UASB process and to the development of the key design parameters for the full scale extended aeration activated sludge process.
